Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
