Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these medications must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
