The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
